New motoring warning for insurance holders

Insurers receive a disproportionately high number of claims from people with car insurance for new drivers each year, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

It is reported that motorists less than 20 years of age are 15% more likely than their older counterparts to be involved in accidents as a result of basic errors.

Novice motorists continue to make young persons car insurance claims after crashes caused by loss of control, sudden braking, and speeding. Inexperienced motorists are also more likely to drive while under the influence of alcohol.

To address this issue the road safety charity has proposed further training for new driving license holders. It has pointed to the success of advanced driving schemes in Austria, where the death rate among young male drivers has decreased by 30%.

The IAM Chief Executive said, "It's clear that handing a driving licence over without offering further help is putting far too many young people at unacceptable risk.

"Post-test training that gives extra hours behind the wheel, including coaching on the critical risks such as rural roads, night time driving, weather and the effect of passengers, will save lives."

Motorists who successfully complete courses such as Pass Plus will also stand a fairly good chance of obtaining affordable car insurance for new drivers.
