It is thought that motorists who have not had the benefit of developing their skills on a safe driving course may be at a greater risk of losing the no claims bonus on their cheap car insurance for new drivers.
Around 12,000 newly qualified drivers in and around Durham, just south of Newcastle Upon Tyne, have successfully completed the police-run Wise Drive course during the last decade. Many have gone on to find affordable young persons car insurance and enjoy years of trouble free driving.
According to a local officer the scheme has played an important role in reducing the number of regional road accidents. However, the course may have to be scrapped unless much needed funds can be generated.
A Durham Police spokesperson said, "A large percentage of our young drivers now aged 17-25 attended a Wise Drive event when they were younger, and we are convinced what they learn stays with them for years.
"I am hopeful we can secure funding to keep the scheme going but in the current financial climate that is far from certain. If there are any potential sponsors out there we would love to hear from them."
People who enrol on advanced motoring courses such as Wise Drive can expect to have an easier time when it comes to obtaining cheap car insurance for new drivers.
