UK car insurance company experts are encouraged by a US study that has revealed an apparent up-side to the current high cost of fuel; a steep drop in road traffic accident fatalities.
A report by the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute reveals a nationwide drop in road deaths since fuel prices rocketed.
Michael Sivak, author of the study, commented that fuel costs have kept some motorists off the roads and also altered the way cars are being driven.
A general reduction in speed has not only seen fuel conservation, but has resulted in fewer and less severe car accidents, he said.
The study reviewed data from May 2007 to April 2008. In the first 10 months fatalities were 4.2% lower than at the same time last year, yet in March and April road deaths dropped dramatically by 22.1% and 17.9% respectively.
The reduction in fatalities was not matched by a reduction in fuel sold or miles traveled in the period, suggesting that motorists were driving more safely.
Some states in the US are still recording road deaths at higher levels than the previous year, but Sivak's study is a national average.
A UK car insurance company spokesperson from Hoot said, "This is encouraging date, however, we always advise our young driver customers to be aware of their speed and driving behaviour. It is a fundamental issue in the prevention of car accidents and general road safety."
