Yellow fire engines for Britain? If we were all to take a word association test for the words "fire engine" it is likely that most of us would immediately respond by saying "red". So chances are that we might find it difficult to come to terms with the idea of all fire engines in the UK being yellow. However, this is what one UK car insurance company proposes we do to increase the conspicuousness of fire engine in the country. Research released by the UK car insurance company confirmed what has been demonstrated by earlier studies: red is less visible than many brighter colours such as lime yellow, making it more difficult to spot in moving traffic. One study (Schumann 1991) pointed out that even when illuminated by flashing lights red is sometimes confused with black, particularly if only seen in the peripheral vision.
A spokesperson for the UK car insurance company commented, "Over a third of respondents in our research picked red as the riskiest colour to paint a car, and almost as many chose black. "From a motor insurance point of view we make no distinctions on colour, but where emergency vehicles are concerned research seems to indicate that lime yellow is the most visible colour."
They believe that lime yellow represents the ideal choice for fire engines in the future, citing a 1995 study by Solomon and King, which showed lime yellow fire vehicles to be, statistically, the least likely to be involved in a road accident. The UK car insurance company behind the study does, however, anticipate some resistance to the proposal from traditionalists, "I must admit that red fire engines do tend to look more powerful and macho than those which are painted yellow, but where safety is concerned we really need to consider which is better for visibility."
