Xmas and NY minicab warnings issuedThose preparing to celebrate Christmas and New Year's Eve have been warned that they should always prebook minicabs. One reason for this is the fact that strict UK car insurance rules for minicabs mean that they are unable to offer accident cover to people who flag-down minicabs at the roadside. This news comes at a time when many taxi drivers in the north of England are threatening to take strike action over the festive period. Manager of cab company Royal Cars told the Oxford Mail, "The best way is to book a taxi. If you book one it gets recorded. If you lose something or something happens we can trace the taxi and who the driver was. "If you flag one down outside you don't know who's picking you up - whether it's a qualified driver or not. "It's extremely dangerous flagging one down outside. I would advise anyone to ring. Customers can't distinguish between a taxi and a non-taxi." Cherwell District Council also warned would-be taxi passengers to take extra care during the Christmas period. Recent taxi driver strikes there have heightened fears that unlicensed and unregulated minicabs may be mopping up the leftover business. However, as unlicensed minicabs do not meet the correct UK car insurance criteria for carrying paying passengers, any customer who suffers an accident in the traditionally difficult Christmas road conditions could well face the prospect of not having their injuries covered by the driver's motor insurance.
