Young drivers don't do maintenance, says online car insurance firm

Online car insurance firm Direct Line has announced that UK drivers under the age of 25 spend around £140 million a year on car maintenance they could be carrying out themselves.

Half of the young drivers questioned as part of the motor insurance firm's latest survey admitted that they couldn't even change a tyre or jumpstart their car.

Direct Line estimated that each 17- to 25-year-old spends £111 on average, with oil changes, brake fluid checks and replacing tyres - all DIY jobs for the previous generation of drivers - among their most common requests.

"It's not unusual for drivers to feel a little helpless when it comes to car maintenance," said a spokesperson for the online car insurance firm.

"However, it is important for drivers to be able to make basic safety checks on their vehicle, such as checking tyre pressure and oil level."
