Cops give young drivers insurance gift for Valentines

Police in the Lothians have unveiled an unusual Valentine's Day gift which could help combat the high rate of road accidents and rising price of young drivers insurance.

February 14 is the launch date for this year's Young Driver event in the Midlothian town of Dalkeith, where locals in their teens and twenties will be given the chance to brush up on their skills behind the wheel and, by doing so, help lower the cost of car insurance for young drivers.

The course takes place over two sessions and finishes with 'Skills Day', where entrants compete for a chance to win a day out at Knockhill Racing Circuit.

It is hoped that presenting driver safety training in a fun and challenging environment will finally engage with the under-25s - an audience who have historically been difficult to reach and re-educate about the dangers of reckless driving.

The importance of having valid young drivers insurance will also be stressed, as high premium costs are tempting more and more young people to get behind the wheel without the level of cover required by law.
