Cheap car insurance crown goes to Wisconsin

Healthy competition amongst insurers and the rarity of natural disasters means that Wisconsin, USA is the top state for cheap car insurance, according to local research group The Taxpayers Network. Wisconsin drivers pay an average of just $707 in yearly car insurance premiums, compared to the national average of $960.

Competition between Wisconsin's 200-plus car insurance companies, a substantially higher number than exist in most other parts of the US, is a major factor in the sale of such cheap car insurance premiums, according to the state's Commissioner of Insurance.

The other big reason is the lack of earthquakes and hurricanes. States that pay over the average for car insurance, including California ($958), Florida ($1,151) and more recently, Louisiana, tend to be places that are prone to these kinds of natural disasters.

Luckily for drivers in Wisconsin, which suffers at worst the occasional tornado, insurers don't have to deal with nearly so many vehicle write-offs - and that means cheap car insurance for everyone living in the northern state.
