Young driver insurance holders who often make the journey along the A1 and M11 not far from Cambridge may be unsurprised to hear that this stretch of road was officially named the most unreliable in England.
A large proportion of drivers had the misfortune of encountering traffic jams when travelling on this major link road during the last year, according to the Department for Transport.
Road delays are almost as likely for drivers journeying from St Neots in Cambridgeshire along the M11 as for those travelling in the opposite direction.
The East Anglia road has proven to be even less dependable than the M25, which is regularly subject to traffic jams. In fact 43.7% of the journeys which drivers make between junction 16 and junction 23 of this much-used motorway take longer than expected.
The chances of hitting heavy traffic are so high that motorists might want to look out for cheap car insurance policies which will provide cover in case of unexpected accidents, such as rear-end collisions.
A spokesperson for the Campaign for Better Transport charity said, "I think congestion is, and will, remain a growing concern unless the government addresses the problem and takes serious measures to reduce the volume of traffic by deterring car use and improving alternatives.
"That is not necessarily the direction we have been going. In London there are more people walking, cycling and going by public transport, but there are also more people making journeys by car."
People who find themselves becoming stressed and irritable during road delays have been reminded that they should drive sensibly in order to reduce the risk of having to make a young driver insurance claim.
