Police appeal to young motorists

Suffolk police are pleading with young motorists to drive more carefully to help reduce the number of road deaths as well as decreasing young driver car insurance claims.

The appeal has been made after young drivers between the ages of 17-24 accounted for 17 out of the 42 people killed in Suffolk last year.

As well as the fatalities, a high number of people arrested or convicted of death by dangerous, or careless driving in the past 12 months were also aged under 25.

While senior traffic officer Insp. Sharman wanted to make it clear that he did not want to demonise young people, he said, "It's been identified for a long time that 17 to 24 year olds are over-represented in killed or serious injury cases. Not only are they a casualty, they are quite often the offender.

Suffolk police in association with the NHS, the county council and Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has done a lot of work through the Roadsafe campaign to teach young drivers about the dangers driving can pose.

Due to the higher accident statistics for young motorists, young driver car insurance is consequently much higher than for older, more experienced drivers.
