Spinal injury rescue wrecks Samaritan's car

Young driver car insurance buyers are reminded to adhere to basic first aid rules after a well-meaning passer-by who helped at the scene of a car accident paid a harsh penalty for his well intentioned, but health-threatening actions.

After witnessing the accident, the worried Nottinghamshire motorist stopped to help the driver of the car that had rolled in front of him. The young driver of the crashed vehicle got out and started to look for his phone.

Having called 999 on his own phone, the Samaritan offered the dazed man shelter in his car while they waited for emergency crews to attend.

When the rescue services arrived the young driver explained that he was suffering from back pain. The firefighters and paramedics then decided that in order not to further exacerbate any potential spinal injury they would have to lift the man out of the car by taking the roof off.

The concerned passer-by told local press, "They wedged the vehicle, took all my stuff out and put it on the side of the road.

"They smashed the windows and cut the roof off and folded it onto the bonnet."

The well-meaning humanitarian's car insurance company paid out to replace the car, but his no-claims bonus was lost, a £300 excess had to be paid, and he also had to find £400 to hire a car and £200 for a blue-tooth headset that was destroyed in the rescue.

He said, "I'm not being greedy I just want what I had before. Next time I'll get them to sit on the floor."
A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was standard procedure to remove an injured person horizontally for safety purposes.

Young driver car insurance buyers are reminded that if a spine or neck injury is suspected the injured person should be moved as little as possible prior to the arrival of emergency crews.
