Young driver car insurance and risky second hand motors

By the time they've figured in the cost of young driver car insurance, new drivers often don't have much money to spend on their vehicle.

A report by the BBC has warned young drivers of the potential dangers when buying cheap second hand cars, as there are a large number for sale that are not fit for the road.

Trading Standards officials reported that five out of eight used cars currently sold in the UK are not safe.

Drivers under 25 are statistically more likely to be involved in a car accident or collision. Vehicle safety equipment and general condition is most pointedly highlighted in a car crash when it fails to protect the occupants.

Peter Stratton, the Trading Standards Institute's lead officer for the motor trade, said: "The poor condition of vehicles is a common contributory factor in road traffic accidents and this new survey shows that there are a lot of death-trap vehicles on the market."

A spokesperson for Hoot, specialists in young driver car insurance, said, "We aim to keep our motor insurance rates as low as possible for young drivers, thus giving them more available money to spend on a safe vehicle."
