New drivers face tougher theory test

Young driver wannabes now have an even bigger challenge to face before they can even think about getting young driver car insurance. Those facing their driving theory tests will now have to face an even tougher test following changes to the exam format.

The new test for car drivers, moped and motorcycle riders involves answering case study questions which will take the form of a scenario or short story, on which five multiple choice questions will be based.

Jill Lewis, Driving Standards Authority's Director of Driver Education and Learning said:
"Case studies are widely used in education to put learning into context and test comprehension of a subject, so many candidates will have encountered this type of question before."

The case study style questions are to be introduced gradually into the test to get students used to the concept before the questions take over from the old format.

Changes to the theory test are part of the Learning to Drive programme, a long-term programme of major reforms that are intended to strengthen the way that people learn to drive and are tested.

An example of a case study and the questions based on it can be viewed online at DSA's YouTube channel. Once the theory and driving tests are out of the way, young motorists then face the challenge of finding cheap young driver car insurance.
