A recent report by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has shown that the drivers who are most likely to get behind the wheel without insurance are young male road users.
Apparently, this section of the driving population spends around 3.7million hours driving uninsured on British roads every month.
IAM believes that this may be due to the rising cost of cover and the fact that young male motorists are, on average, paying the most.
A spokesperson stated, "The average cost of a claim by young drivers is £4,500, but insurance can cost nearly twice that. On a price comparison site for a 17-year-old male, our cheapest quote came in at just over £7,000."
The director of IAM explains that currently many road users, including some people who should be seeking new driver car insurance, think that they can get away with driving without cover.
However this is an attitude which must be changed. He says, "Young people must be convinced that the only way to drive is fully licensed and insured."
He states that the key to reducing road traffic offences amongst young driver car insurance holders and the uninsured is to have a system which would mean that reckless motorists must undertake a safe driving course even for minor transgressions.
