Study reveals university towns' crime hotspots
New research has highlighted car crime and burglary blackspots in UK university towns and cities, prompting fears about the cost of young driver car insurance in student areas.
Manchester was found to be the place most at risk for both car crimes and burglaries. Other major crime-hit towns include London, Birmingham, Cardiff and Bristol.
Students are less likely to fall victim to crime in safer towns such as Durham and Lancaster. Scottish cities were also shown to be safer places to study with Aberdeen, St Andrews and Edinburgh enjoying lower crime rates.
Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield and Bristol were shown to have more thefts of and from motor cars than any other town or city. Cars were more likely to be stolen if young people studied in Cardiff while Nottingham students were more likely to have their vehicles broken into.
Manchester and Birmingham proved to be university towns with the most burglaries, while student digs in Durham and Lancaster were least likely to have break-ins.
Commenting on the research, a spokeswoman said, "Students should put insurance cover in place for their possessions and also update their car insurance if they are moving away from home."
The research study was conducted over 12 months until July this year and highlighted the importance of arranging home and young driver car insurance for students.
