Young driver car insurance requires you to lock up or else
I wonder how many of you forget to lock your doors when you park your car, thus, in many cases, negating your young driver car insurance?
In Ottawa, Canada, the incidents of thefts from unlocked cars are so prevalent that a local police officer has called for drivers who leave their cars without locking them to be fined.
"The point is that people need to be reminded that there's a group of people who will just go from one car to another preying on the vulnerable," said the constable.
He adds that bylaws offering "symbolic" small fines for people who don't comply with car-locking rules are already in place in some neighbouring cities.
One motorist whose car was broken into said, "They only hit the cars that were unlocked. All the cars in the row that were locked they didn't touch. I think it should be up to each individual if they want to lock their car or not. Take the risk."
An Ottawa city councilor is said to be considering the police officer's idea, as car crime takes up valuable police time and causes car insurance rates to rise.
A Hoot spokesperson said, "We are sure our young driver car insurance customers read and understand their policy restrictions regarding leaving a car unlocked and unattended. Their claim for vehicle theft or theft from vehicle is almost certain to be rejected if they are neglectful: it is therefore not worth the risk."
