Young driver car insurance customers warned about direct debits

Young driver car insurance customers often buy policies that will allow them to spread the cost; however, it seems that the cost for doing so can be somewhat expensive.

MoneyExpert.com, the online price comparison site for motor insurance, has warned young drivers that they could pay much more on their yearly premium if they decide to spread the cost over 12 monthly instalments.

Most newly qualified drivers are still in full-time education and so it can be harder to afford the initial one-off payment on their cheap car insurance. To make life easier, motorists tend to use the direct debit route and spread the cost of their policy with monthly payments.

With the average car insurance policy totalling around £1000, it is believed that as much as £200 could be added on top of that if motorists choose to use the direct debit option.

A spokesperson for MoneyExpert.com said: "Only around one in 12 motor insurers do not charge for the convenience of direct debit."

Commenting of the story, a spokesperson for Hoot Car Insurance Services, the young driver car insurance provider, said: "Deciding to go through the route of direct debits can easily put a higher price on your policy.

"Unless you can stump up the cash when renewal time comes, the best thing is to search around for a car insurance company that will be able to offer a direct debit option but without charging interest."
