Young driver car insurance for men is twice the cost of women's cover
Young driver car insurance for men is costing about double that for women, according to studies by a leading motoring organisation.
In what appears to be a staggering statistic, the UK's Automobile Association (AA) reckons average insurance costs for young men can be about £4500 while for young women the figure is about half that figure at £1810.
However, once young drivers reach their 21st birthday, the quote drops to £563 for males and £333 for females.
The AA explains the gender price gap by saying that men under 21 years old are ten times more likely to crash than males in their mid-30s. Young female drivers are less of a risk but still five times more likely to be in an accident than women who are 35 years old or over.
Simon Douglas, AA insurance director, said, "Regardless of gender, premiums quickly fall for drivers who remain accident blame-free and don't collect driving offences."
Smart tips for teenaged and student drivers to enjoy cheaper car insurance costs:
- Drive at the legal speed limit to avoid motoring offences.
- Take a Pass Plus test to slash 35 per cent off car insurance prices.
- Young men can add a partner or girlfriend to reduce the cost of their policy.
- Keeping a clean driving record until aged 21 can reduce the price of cover by up to 80 per cent.
The AA also recommends driving a car with a smaller-sized engine in as safe and sensible a way as possible to benefit after a year from a no claims discount on young driver car insurance.
