A new survey has revealed that nearly one in five policyholders believe the terms of their young driver car insurance policies are written in a deliberately confusing way.
Although 42% of drivers confessed to being unable to fully comprehend the terms of their motor insurance cover, a staggering 18% said that their policies, whether young driver car insurance or otherwise, were written in terms that may actually be designed to baffle them.
The marketing director of the company behind the research commented, "Some drivers struggle with the terms used in their insurance, but it's vital that they read and understand their insurance policies so they know exactly what they are covered for.
She also said that an "online jargon-buster" may help make "insurance terms clearer and ensures drivers get the right cover and best value insurance for their needs."
She said that she believed the confusion was not ascribable to malice on the part of motor insurers but rather the complex nature of cover. "Car insurance is very complex, so this means that the wording used in policy terms and conditions can be fairly complicated," she said.
Among the terms young driver car insurance holders admitted to not understanding were "non-fault claim", "fully comprehensive", "social, domestic, and pleasure use", "material fact" and "voluntary excess".
