Car insurance could be reduced with new road safety device

The results from a six-month trial of a road safety device which could cut young driver road deaths and help reduce the cost of young driver car insurance have been revealed by Staffordshire County Council.

An under-bonnet monitoring device was fitted to the cars of 40 young drivers in the county and parents were able to monitor any dangerous manoeuvring undertaken by the young road users via the internet.

Results revealed that the number of high risk driving behaviours fell by 58 per cent once the drivers knew parents would be monitoring their driving.

On average, fuel consumption fell by 10 per cent and the young drivers could receive a 25 per cent discount on their car insurance if the device is fitted.

Drivers who score well while driving are likely to be rewarded with shopping vouchers on a monthly basis.

Andrew Howard, head of road safety at the AA, said, "Young drivers know how to drive safely, it's just that they choose not to. With a parent keeping an eye on them, they are less likely to show off.

"The only risk is that they may choose to travel in friends' cars which do not have the device."

Young driver insurance can also be reduced by obtaining no-claims bonus each year. For every year that a person drives without making a claim on their car insurance, their renewal quote will go down.
