Motor insurer study targets youth

Bad news for young driver car insurance hopefuls: new research indicates that they are two times more likely than the average driver to have an accident.

There was another piece of bad news too with the research revealing that accidents involving younger drivers are five times more likely to result in injury.

And this was a picture reflected in motor insurance figures. According to the company behind the research young driver car insurance claims tend to be more costly than those involving older motorists.

The motor insurer which commissioned the study said that the average cost of a young driver car insurance claim is around £3,500, more than twice the average of £1,710.

A spokesperson from the insurer commented, "From our point of view driving experience makes a huge difference and is the main reason older motorists have lower premiums.

"It isn't until motorists reach 25 that their accident statistics improve substantially, but it really is the youngest ones who are the biggest risk."
