US insurer Safeco has recently launched a new kind of young driver car insurance that puts parents back in the loop about their child's driving habits. "Teensurance", as the package is called, is similar to the 'pay as you drive' policies currently available in the UK - but the difference is it's mum and dad who are notified when you break the rules.
Based on sophisticated black box technology, the Teensurance computers log any incidence of speeding or dangerous driving; and the young driver's family gets a call soon afterward. On top of that, Teensurance lets parents set their own rules for their son or daughter, such as imposing a late night curfew or specifying the area in which they're allowed to drive.
Regarding the new motor insurance scheme, a spokeswoman for America's Insurance Information Institute said: "You can say, 'I hope you are driving under the speed limit,' and your child will say, 'I am, I am,' and you just have to shake your head and cross your fingers and go along with the game. If you have this kind of specificity, you are actually being an effective parent."
After successful trials, Safeco is now making the new young driver car insurance available to all its 4.3 million customers (and their parents) in 44 states. The Seattle-based firm says its own staff it will not be privy to the information collected by Teensurance computers, even in the event of a crash which leads to a car insurance claim.
