Pilfering police pinch pricey pickings

In a bid to tackle the number of car thefts and to help safeguard their young driver car insurance, police are taking valuables from unlocked cars to teach drivers to be more careful with their belongings.

The scheme has been targeted on the Richmond area after the number of car thefts in the area has risen by 40% in the last year. Motorists around Richmond have been returning to their cars to discover handbags, lap tops and sat navs have all gone missing as police have been busy pilfering unlocked cars and swapping valuables for notes, sending car owners to their local police station.

If police find valuables on display, they will try to find the owner nearby otherwise the goods will be taken to the local police station.

Drivers that leave their cars unlocked but with nothing on display will get a letter warning them to be more careful.

The project comes after a fifth of all car thefts in Richmond were found to be on unlocked cars. The scheme is aimed at reminding drivers to lock their vehicles before leaving them to prevent car theft and claims on their young driver car insurance.
