The study, published in the Journal of Psychology & Marketing, gathered information from 134 surveys answered by both women and men with an average age of 23.5, observing the influences of personality, attitudes and values.
The findings revealed that drivers who view their vehicles as a reflection of themselves are more likely to be aggressive to other road users and break the law.
It has been indicated that materialism and the importance of one's possessions are linked to motorists' increasing aggressive driving habits.
The authors of the study concluded that their findings "suggest individuals may view cars and the road space they occupy as their territory and will seek to maintain control over it and defend it as necessary."
