It is common knowledge that young driver insurance is the most expensive since they are new to the roads. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has now said that new drivers should not be given a full licence straight away.
Not having a full licence would mean there would be certain restrictions involved with driving ranging from a ban on night time driving to restricting the amount of passengers allowed in the car at one time.
The ABI feels that these measures would greatly reduce the number of deaths caused by young motorists on the road.
Currently, incentives such as cheap car insurance for young drivers who drive safely mean that road-accident figures are declining, yet the ABI spokesperson said that there was still an unacceptable level of young drivers being killed on the roads.
To counter this, the ABI is proposing a one-year learning period before young people take their test as well as a ban on intensive driving courses within a short period of time. They also want new drivers to have to go through a second driving test two years after they pass to make sure no bad habits have developed
Having these stricter rules for new drivers could mean that young driver insurance reduces in cost in the long term as drivers become more safety conscious through the encouragement of better driving skills.
