Ford crash-avoidance technology tested on balloons

American engineers are experimenting with life-size car-shaped balloons in an attempt to create crash-avoidance technology that could bring cheaper quotes for old and young driver insurance alike.

Recent press reports have included images of Ford researchers using the inflatable vehicles as target practice, actively trying to create a collision, so that the 'Adaptive Cruise Control with Collision Warning' system can be tested.

Although Ford experts are intending to fit the system to the top end models initially, it is likely that versions of the system may be developed by other manufacturers and may trickle down into the kind of cars that fit within a young driver's car insurance budget.

Good news for the UK statisticians who calculate young driver insurance quotes can also be found in the fact that one of the researchers mentions that their test drivers drive too safely to begin with; "The first few times you drive into the balloon, it's scary," he said, "A lot of first-time drivers can't not brake."
