The rise of the Granddad racer
Car drivers wanting to purchase young driver insurance are often tarred, as a group, by the image of irresponsible boy racers who race up and down UK roads in souped-up performance cars. However, new research has shown that the age-group owning the most powerful cars are the over 60s.
From a survey of more than 1.5 million drivers, the elephant.co.uk data revealed that the average engine size driven by motorists in their 60s is 1,947cc.
The most expensive cars are driven by drivers in their 50s, with an average value of £7,506.
Unsurprisingly, it was shown that young drivers, under 20, own the least expensive cars.
A spokesperson for Hoot said, "Young driver insurance can be kept at a lower price if drivers without a long no-claims history choose cars with smaller engines. Older drivers, with more disposable income, are rewarded for years of accident free motoring with cheaper car quotes for their more powerful cars."
