Young driver insurance and drink driving risks

The cost of young driver insurance is adversely affected by the number of convictions and car accidents that occur amongst 17-25-year-olds.

Following drink driving figures for the 2008 Christmas period, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) director of research and policy, Neil Greig, has said, "There is still a significant percentage of young people ignoring the fact that drinking and driving kills."

During the month-long anti-drink driving campaign there was an 11% increase in the number of under-25s who failed breath tests when compared to last year.

In an attempt to address this issue Roger Singer, project leader of the road safety charity DDE+ (Drink Driver Education Plus) has produced a DVD learning pack to help young and inexperienced drivers to understand the issues of driving after consuming alcohol.

The "Don't Blow Your License - How not to Drink and Drive" video has been developed to stop young drivers getting convicted the morning after a night out drinking.

Mr Singer said, "It's vital we get young drivers up to speed on this problem, they have little idea about 'morning after' and even less about managing drug driving.

"The video shows drivers how to calculate the units of alcohol they drink, and then work out the hours that must elapse before they can drive.

"The figures are simple to deal with, and you don't need to be an expert to arrive at the answer."

He added that hopefully, it would stimulate drivers to consider the damaging, and sometimes fatal results of getting in their cars and driving after drinking or using drugs which has the potential to increase the cost of young driver insurance.
