Young drivers endangering road users while uninsured
Young people have been singled out by UK motorists' organisation, the AA, for putting other road users in danger because many fail to buy young driver insurance and get behind the wheel while uninsured.
Labelled Top Gear fans by some insurers, young motorists are seen as the group that mainly drive without insurance.
Many youths who have yet to pass their tests frequently buy and modify cars as a hobby. However, after spending months adding new features to vehicles, they then find that insurers will not cover them.
At this point, after carrying out much hard work on modifications, young people can decide to drive it anyway without bothering to seek out any further car insurance quotes; cheap or otherwise.
Ian Crowder, a spokesman for AA Insurance, said, "These young drivers are not only breaking the law, and putting other road users at peril, but they are also risking their entire future."
He said young people should put modified vehicles into store as they are unlikely to find any company that will insure them.
Young motorists should aim to build up a no claims bonus by driving a car in a lower risk insurance category, said Mr Crowder. After driving accident-free for a year, premium levels for young driver insurance will fall.
