Pleas to tackle uninsured driving
The high cost of young driver insurance is leading many younger motorists to flout the law and drive while uninsured.
According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), some 60% of people convicted of uninsured driving are under 25 years old; 50% are aged under 20.
It is feared that there are many other young drivers failing to take out insurance because the IAM figures represent only the motorists that have been caught - others could have escaped detection.
Car insurance rates have risen by some nine per cent to date this year - but for young drivers, especially young men, the rise has been greater because statistics show they are much more likely to be involved in crashes including fatal and serious injury accidents.
The IAM's motoring trust director, Neil Greig, said, "These drivers have a high risk of crashing and there is a perception among their peers that they can get away with it."
To improve driving standards and help keep down the cost of young driver insurance, the IAM is calling for convicted and reckless young motorists to attend corrective courses.
