Being told that males pay for more for young driver car insurance is not news; finding out just how much more, however, may be illuminating to many.
Research reported on the thisisgloucestershire.co.uk website reveals that a 17-year-old male, living in the GL1 postcode area, driving an unmodified, three-door, 1.2 litre P-reg Renault Clio would be given an AA car insurance quote of £6,624.
Giving the same details for a female young driver resulted in a quote of £4,155 – almost £2,500 cheaper.
Ian Crowder, from the AA, said, "Young male drivers pay more because they tend to make larger claims than young women.
"Males tend to take more risks and can be encouraged by friends to break driving rules."
Some car insurance companies wouldn't even offer car insurance for young drivers aged 17 over the internet, as any driver under the age of 25 is required to speak to an advisor to answer extra questions.
A spokesperson from Hoot, commented, "Hoot's young driver insurance is specifically aimed at drivers aged 17-24 as we believe our car insurance product, using telematics technology, can significantly reduce the cost of policies and can help young drivers to improve their driving habits."
