Police courses for young driversA police scheme aiming to cut numbers of young driver deaths in three UK counties has been applauded by an online car insurance business - and calls made for its introduction nationwide. Young people who are stopped for traffic offences in the Thames Valley area can choose to attend driver training courses rather than face a fine and points on their licence. With road accidents killing more people aged 16 to 25 than any other cause, Hoot Car Insurance Services said the new initiative was a major step forward to help save lives. "This scheme can help raise driving standards among many young people who currently risk death or serious injury before they realise their driving is unsafe," said a spokesperson. "Police across the country should consider adopting the scheme. No one wants to see young people maimed or killed. "By catching them in the act of bad driving and then working to tackle the real problems of irresponsible or just plain poor driving there is a real chance of keeping young drivers safe on the roads." UK car accident figures show about two thirds of young people killed in crashes had committed a traffic offence or been involved in a more minor smash before fatal incidents. Thames Valley police, who cover Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, said the scheme is not an easy option. The scheme is a hard-talking, example-driven, zero tolerance-style approach to challenge motorists who think they can defy death on the road while not obeying safety rules. The Hoot spokesperson said a connected benefit from the scheme should be lower car insurance for young drivers costs because there would be fewer injury, death and damage-related costs to be met.
