Young driver crashes dad's car then flees
A 20-year-old man who took his dad's car for a spin but left a trail of car damage in his wake did not have young drivers car insurance, South Tyneside magistrates court heard recently.
The young driver crashed the Volkswagen Fox into a Nissan X-Trail, Renault Megane, Nissan Micra, Honda Civic and a Renault Clio, before dumping the VW and running home.
Later police forced entry into his home, found him in his bedroom, intoxicated and dancing to music; he had more than three times the legal blood alcohol limit in his system.
At an earlier hearing the man admitted failing to stop after a car accident and driving without young driver's insurance, but said he had been sober whilst driving and only consumed alcohol after the incident.
The court found him guilty however; he was given a two and a half year driving ban, ordered to carry out 160 hours of unpaid work and will have to pay £200 compensation and £150 costs.
The district judge said, "Drinking, then driving, then crashing your father's car is bad enough.
"When you then run away from the scene, having damaged several cars, it has to be said you acted in a way which showed a criminal lack of responsibility.
"You need to learn to accept responsibility, and that's the growing up you need to do."
A spokesperson for Hoot, the young driver's car insurance provider, said, "Specialist insurers can help young drivers get a great deal on their private car policy so they can remain legal at all times."
