Those wishing to get a good deal on young driver's car insurance are often advised that small cars are the best option for cheap cover and a new car being sold in India could be the answer to young driver dreams.
The Tata Nano will be manufactured and sold in India from April. The first of the 10 ft (3 metres) long cars will get on the road in July, and with a price tag of 100,000 rupees (£1,366) it is hoped that many Indian families will be able to afford a vehicle that can transport the whole family together for the first time.
The basic model is a four door, no frills vehicle; without air conditioning, airbags, radio or power steering, but it will have five seats. It will run on a 624cc engine, have 33bhp and a top speed of 65mph.
A slightly bigger European version, called the Nano Europa, is scheduled to appear on the market in 2011, with an expected cost of nearer £4,000, but it is still likely to be a very low car insurance grouping.
Ravi Kant, the managing director of Tata, said, "I think we are at the gates of offering a new form of transport to the people of India and later, I hope, other markets elsewhere in the world."
"I hope it will provide safe, affordable four-wheel transportation to families who till now have not been able to own a car."
He added that, out of the received orders, a ballot would take place to see who gets the first 100,000 Nanos off the production line.
A spokesperson for Hoot, said, "It will be interesting to see if any of the original Nanos end up in the UK and just how cheap young driver's car insurance would be for one."
