Calls for driving re-tests across UK
A new study of adults aged over 65 has highlighted a key UK motoring issue - that young drivers car insurance is higher than that for the elderly because young people are among the nation's worst drivers.
And the research by Age Concern reveals that most older people - 89 per cent - believe anyone with a bad driving record should re-take their driving licence test.
Responding to criticism of elderly drivers, the charity that campaigns for the elderly points out that the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has found that motorists over 70 years old are statistically safer than younger men and women aged under 30.
Insurance for young drivers is known to be more expensive because national statistics show that young people are almost ten times more likely to be killed or seriously injured than older, more experienced motorists. Each day on UK roads, a young person aged 16-19 years old is killed.
Age Concern believes old people are being discriminated against and is demanding that recently announced plans to re-test elderly drivers regardless of their ability should be scrapped.
An Age Concern spokesman said, "Our research shows that older people feel they shouldn't be singled out and any questionable motorists should be retested, no matter what age they are. At Age Concern, we know that older people need their cars to remain independent, even if it is just to pop to the shops once a week."
Young drivers car insurance at Hoot is offered to young people as cheaply as possible because Hoot recognises how frustrating it is to obtain car cover at an affordable price.
