Report calls for more training to improve teenage driving
Young drivers have difficulty negotiating road junctions, a new report has revealed, leading to calls for car insurance companies, schools and parents to try to help improve young motorists' driving.
Accidents at junctions are more likely for young drivers with 46 per cent of younger women and 43 per cent of younger men shown to have problems at busy crossroads and intersections in towns and cities.
As a result of the study, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) - who have organised the report and published its findings - has suggested a variety of measures to educate young people about urban driving, including:
- Teach road safety at school as part of the national curriculum
- Parents to help teenagers with driving after they pass their test
- Insurance companies to set lower premiums if young drivers keep practicing after tests
IAM's road safety chief, Kevin Delaney, said, "The majority of young drivers have the right attitude to driving but aren't fully prepared for dealing with more complicated junctions, which they may not have come across in order to pass their driving test."
The IAM wants cheaper car insurance for young drivers if they receive further driving practice after passing their test, with insurance companies encouraging better motoring by lowering premiums when young people receive additional driving education.
