No night driving for Bulgaria's youths

Bulgarian politicians have voted in favour of several Traffic Act amendments that will affect buyers of young driver's insurance, reports the Sofia Echo, an online news site for UK ex-pats in Bulgaria.

At the first reading of the amendments the parliament adopted a regulation that stipulates drivers younger than 25 years and those who have held a driving licence for less than one year are not allowed to drive after dark.

Young drivers will also be prohibited from driving vehicles with an engine capacity greater than 1.6 litres.

The new motoring regulations will also forbid a young driver from having a minor as a sole passenger, and there is now a zero-tolerance on blood alcohol levels.

Traffic fines have also been increased and the right to appeal against a Bulgarian speeding fine based on video evidence has been repealed.

Whereas the new laws could be seen as punitive, the effects on saving lives and providing cheaper young drivers insurance may be positively quantitative in the future. On second reading all amendments will be subject to further appeal.
