Sporty cars cost more to cover

If the opportunity arises to buy a sporty model of a popular car, new data from uSwitch has revealed that the added extras could bump up the price of young driver's insurance quite significantly.

Researchers found that comprehensive cover for an 17-year-old to drive a new Peugeot 206 would cost around £4,600, but equal insurance for the GTi version leaps to a staggering £11,000.

And on a Ford Focus 1.6, when side skirts, tinted windows, flared wheel arches and wings, and exhaust system changes were included on the young driver's insurance quote they added a massive £6,225 to the basic model's cover costs.

Plus, if "go-faster" modifications are not included on a young driver's insurance policy, the holder may find themselves in 'hot water' in the event of an accident as failure to provide information about such additions could mean the equipment is not covered by the policy or, worse still, the insurance could be rendered invalid.
