Although they can help safeguard your young drivers insurance and protect you and other road users, it seems some motorists are becoming increasingly enraged with speed cameras, or Gatsos, as the number of the speed deterrents being vandalised continues to increase.
Two cameras on one stretch of road in East Dorset were set alight on consecutive weekends, and four others have been vandalised in the county in the past year.
The cameras had been set alight, axed, sawn, stoned, super glued, shot at, sprayed with paint, pushed over and ringed with a flaming tyre. Each fixed speed camera costs a whopping £40,000 to replace.
In 2007, motorists seeking revenge wrecked about 200 speed cameras across Britain, running up a £500,000 repair bill.
While the cameras are out of action, teams of marked and unmarked police cars are patrolling the area to check for speeding motorists as well as to ensure drivers are wearing seatbelts, have valid tax and car insurance, and are not driving whilst on the phone.
In just three days the teams in East Dorset had issued fines of up to £200 to 151 drivers. And 83 of those fined were given penalty points on their licence.
Although public opinion of speed cameras is generally poor, it should be remembered that they are placed in specific areas where a slower speed is essential perhaps due to a nearby school or the treacherous conditions of the road. Also the cost of replacement cameras is of course covered by the tax payer, therefore to keep your young drivers insurance costs down as well as keeping yourself and other road users safe, it is best just accept the cameras and stick to the limits.
