Motorists leave valuables in their cars

Motorists could expect a hike in young drivers insurance after a study found many people are risking break-ins by leaving valuables in their vehicles.

Opportunist thieves are more likely to target cars with high value items on view such as wallets and mobile phones.

Car cover firm LV= blame motorists' carelessness for increasing the risk of break-ins, pointing out that cheap car insurance for young drivers could be affected.

According to the study, about 80 per cent (four fifths) of motorists admit to leaving valuables in their vehicles while a quarter of drivers end up as victims of break-ins.

In the research, various figures were highlighted - men were found to be more careless than women, leaving about £380 of valuables in their motors; while young people, as a core group aged under 35, left about £334 worth of items lying in their vehicles. The national average cost of valuables left in cars was £285 according to the study.

Emma Holyer, speaking for LV=, said: "These figures show a casual attitude amongst motorists when it comes to leaving their belongings in the car. The fact is that most car break-ins are by opportunist thieves who would probably not bother to break into the car if it looked as though it didn't contain anything to steal."

The high cost of items left in vehicles highlights the importance that, for young drivers, insurance policies should be checked for decent contents cover.
