Police launch campaign to keep roads safe

During the holiday season parties serving alcoholic beverages become commonplace in the UK, and, unless they want their young drivers insurance to skyrocket, youngsters need to avoid this temptation if they are going to be on the roads.

Police in Cornwall and Devon are commencing a Christmas anti-drink-drive campaign which takes a look at young drivers, in particular men, who take unnecessary risks on the roads.

This month-long campaign will run straight through Christmas and into the first few days of the New Year.

Police say that in recent years, in Devon and Cornwall, almost one third of those providing a breath analysis were under-25, yet men in this age group only make up 10% of drivers on the roads.

With the rise in social events this month, holders of car insurance for young drivers should take road safety seriously as reckless driving could cost young people financially and cause injuries or even death to road users.

Police are hoping the campaign will dissuade young men from getting behind the wheel of a car when under the influence, however they also hope that friends and partners will play their part in keeping the roads safe.

Those convicted of driving while being under the influence of drink or drugs will face more than their young person's insurance increasing in cost, with penalties such as a 12-month driving ban, a fine of up to £5,000, and a potential six month prison sentence.
