Research reveals young drivers prepared to take biggest risks behind the wheelResearchers at road safety charity Brake and the motoring organisation Green Flag has revealed that a growing number of young drivers are prepared to take enormous risks when driving.
Their study revealed that younger drivers were prepared to overtake on blind bends (as many as one in three had confessed to overtaking when they couldn't see what was coming in the opposite direction). Many youngsters were also prepared to drive under the influence of illegal drugs (up to one in eleven had admitted driving after taking drugs). Surprisingly, half of those interviewed said that they had used a mobile telephone whilst driving, despite the well publicised risks of doing so.
A spokesperson from Hoot car insurance said, "The research reflects the high number of deaths amongst young drivers. Sadly around 15 young lives are lost every week on the road in the UK. Some of these deaths could surely be avoided if more emphasis were placed on educating those learning to drive of taking unnecessary risks. The big insurers are acutely aware that this group is the most likely to have an accident. Car insurance prices for newly qualified drivers are higher because of this and cheaper car insurance for younger drivers was unlikely until the figures improved significantly."
