Sussex Police have urged novice drivers, including those with young persons car insurance, to exercise more caution when behind the wheel. This advice was given after a rear-end collision, which led to the hospitalisation of a schoolgirl.
The accident occurred last April, when a newly qualified motorist was driving along a busy road in East Sussex. The traffic ahead of him had stopped but, unfortunately, he did not notice soon enough to bring his vehicle to a halt.
He collided into the back of another car, which was then pushed forward into a young girl who had chosen to cross at a marked crossing. It is not yet known whether the driver of the vehicle in front made a car insurance claim for the damage to their vehicle.
The girl sustained some injuries, but was later released from a local hospital. She is reportedly recovering from the emotional distress of being involved in the accident.
A representative of the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit said, "This case clearly highlights the issue of young drivers being at a higher risk of being involved in serious collisions than other road using groups."
The at-fault young driver appeared in the local magistrates' court last week, where he was issued with a fine of £165, including court costs. He has been banned from driving for nine months.
The Sussex Police has said that this case should remind young drivers of the importance of keeping their concentration on the road. People who want to keep their young persons car insurance no claims bonus intact have been advised to enrol on advanced driving courses.
