Chichester students given first taste of driving

Youngsters who are set to begin their hunt for student car insurance have been allowed to hone their driving skills under expert supervision at the renowned Goodwood motor circuit in West Sussex.

The college students have enjoyed the opportunity of driving around in a Mini, while learning about the hazards which lie in wait on the British roads.

The motoring programme takes the form of an assortment of missions, beginning with basic acceleration and braking, and moving on to manoeuvres.

Educational establishments from across Chichester have signed their students up for the short course, which takes place on alternate Sundays.

Organiser, Mark Featherstone has set the goal of decreasing the amount paid for young drivers insurance by fresh faced motorists, who have little experience on the roads.

"Over time we hope to develop so our instructors here can take them out on the road in the same car," he commented.

"It's also difficult for parents to buy their kids anything more than a cheap run-around that is not fit for purpose because insurance is so high on new drivers," he went on.

It remains to be seen whether insurers will be prepared to cut the costs of student car insurance for youngsters who've taken part in the scheme, but the improved road skills the young drivers can gain could prove to be invaluable.
