Direct Line snubs online car insurance comparison sitesDirect Line has attacked online car insurance comparison sites for presenting what it regards as a narrow and inaccurate view of the insurance business. Research by the motor insurance firm has found that a significant minority of motorists (41 percent) who used such sites believed they prepared quotes from every major car insurance company in the market. However, some insurers - Direct Line among them - never appear on the comparison tables, because they have not granted permission to use their quotes. According to a Direct Line spokesperson: "Consumers are confused about price comparison websites and our research shows many believe they provide an independent, public service designed to ensure consumers get the best deal on their insurance. Unfortunately this is not the case. "These websites are really just on-line middlemen who make money out of commissions on insurance sales, just like a traditional high street broker," she added. Direct Line went on to criticise the online car insurance firms who post cheap prices on comparison sites just to reach the top of the table, only to disappoint potential customers with a much higher rate when they click through to their own websites. Not surprisingly, the accusations have provoked an angry response from the sites. The managing director of Confused.com said: "This looks like an act of desperation from an increasingly uncompetitive Direct Line. "Nine times out of ten Direct Line's quotes wouldn't feature in our top five cheapest prices. And in some cases, Direct Line doesn't even make the top ten."
