Online car insurance comparison site brings attention to January debts

An online car insurance comparison site has found that Christmas overspending has caused over 1 million bills to remain unpaid in January 2007 - with many expected to run over into late February.

MoneyExpert.com found that whilst credit card bills are the most likely to go without being paid, this is by no means the extent of the problem. Many householders will be receiving red reminders for utilities, and may also fail to pay council tax, rent, and car insurance bills.

Those who miss a car insurance payment are likely to find themselves without motor insurance cover and are liable to be charged with uninsured driving if stopped by the police.

Sean Gardner of MoneyExpert.com said: "January is the most popular time of year for people to review their finances. If you can't afford to pay all your bills, you might need to consolidate your debts or consider a more affordable repayment plan.

The online car insurance site representative went on to advise people to help their situation by alerting their bank or service provider if they are having financial difficulties, as they will be looked upon more favourably for being honest.
