£5 mil. General Lee sets online price record

Online car insurance prices are generally cheaper than the high street but it appears the same can't be said of secondhand car sales, after an old Dodge Charger went for just under £5 million on eBay.

The winning bid of £4,950,250 means that the orange 2-door coupe - familiar to fans of US TV series The Dukes of Hazzard as 'the General Lee' - could become the most expensive item ever sold on the auction site.

Owned until recently by one of the original cast members, the car in question, which comes complete with "01" painted on the doors and the Confederate flag on the roof, did not actually appear in the show - but it has been signed by all the surviving Dukes actors.

The seller, who had expected a much more modest £1.5 million, said: "This is really, really quite amazing."

If the sale goes through it will beat eBay's previous record of £2.45 million, which is apparently the going rate for a used private jet.

"Does that mean a General Lee is worth two private jets?" wondered Mike Page, spokesman for the online car insurance specialists at Hoot Car Insurance Services.

"I don't like to think how much motor insurance would cost for a £5 million car," he added.
