Motor insurance news 10/05/2007
Online car insurance firms 'worried' by uninsured driversAs many as one fifth of UK drivers admit to putting off or avoiding paying their motor insurance premiums altogether due to financial pressures, a recent YouGov poll has found. With the average cost of driving now above £1,750 per year, 74 percent of the 2,213 Britons surveyed said they needed to keep strict tabs on their motoring expenditure. Even so, many still overspend - and so find themselves in the position where keeping up with their motor insurance payments becomes impossible. A spokesperson from online car insurance firm Zurich described the results as 'worrying'. "Some drivers are risking their own and others' safety in a bid to save money," he said. "We need to change these attitudes and remember that it is a legal requirement to have both valid MOT and insurance." "Financial pressure is no excuse for driving uninsured, particularly as the actual cost of insurance has remained stable for the past few years," commented Mike Page, on behalf of online car insurance firm Hoot Car Insurance Services. "If you can't afford cheap car insurance, you can't afford to drive," he added.
