Online car insurance broker predicts harsh penalties for hand-held drivers

Tougher laws on using a mobile phone while driving will mean 10,000 UK motorists a year getting 'stung' by their car insurance firm.

That's according to online car insurance firm Quoteline Direct, which foresees insurers taking an unusually heavy-handed approach to drivers convicted of the offence.

Quoteline's announcement comes in the wake of new harsher sentencing for those motorists who are caught taking or making calls on a hand-held telephone while driving. Now offenders can expect a £60 fine and three points on their licence - and that's before the car insurance companies take their pound of flesh.

"Three points on a licence for speeding or jumping a red light has always bumped up premiums slightly but I expect many insurers to take a harsher view of people convicted of this offence," said a spokesman for the online car insurance broker.

"The widespread publicity this has received and the increasing taboo action of using a phone while driving will mean that as many as 10,000 drivers a year will be stung by their insurance company."
