Young driver car insurance news 05/07/2007
Speeding costs us £30 million, says online car insurance firmThey cost us an extra £30 million a year in car insurance premiums - but according to research by Swiftcover.com, speeding convictions haven't yet convinced us to stick to legal speeds. The online car insurance firm revealed the staggering cost of speeding in 2006, when almost two million motorists were caught breaking the limit on UK highways. In spite of a rapid rise in the number of speed cameras on our roads (up 26 percent in 2006 on the previous year) and the threat of fines and penalty points for those who are caught, 40 percent of motorists surveyed by Swiftcover still think speeding is acceptable on quiet roads. "It seems motorists are still happy to flout the threat of fines if they think the road conditions are safe," said Swiftcover's chief executive. "Motorists are not only forking out more than ever before in speeding fines but are also fiscally penalised twice through increased car insurance premiums following a conviction." However, the online car insurance provider revealed that its own customers will not be penalised with higher rate motor insurance for a first speeding offence.
